Zeus' father Cronus had been eating his offspring. Zeus' mother, Gaia, tricked Cronus by giving him a rock in blankets to eat instead of baby Zeus. Zeus was hidden from Cronus and grew up in Crete. He sought out his father when he was old enough in order to save his siblings and exact revenge.
Cronus was a Titan God and overthrew his father to lead the Titans. He was a jealous God and so when his wife Rhea gave birth, he would devour their offspring. Rhea and Gaia came up with a plan to stop Cronus. Rhea travelled to Crete to give birth to her youngest son, Zeus. She then gave Cronus a stone within a bundle of blankets and pretended that this was their baby Zeus. Cronus swallowed the 'baby Zeus' rock and went on his way...
There are varying accounts as to what happened to Zeus in his childhood.
The first account states that Zeus was raised by a nymph called Amalthea. She hid Zeus from his father Cronus by dangling him from a tree by a rope - he was then not within the sea, sky, or earth and so was invisible to his father.
The second account states that Zeus was raised by a goat called Amalthea in a cave in Crete. A battalion of soldiers clashed their weapons together to drown out baby Zeus' cries.
Zeus grew up into a young adult, and then went on a journey to find his father and rescue his siblings.
Zeus found his father and made Cronus disgorge his siblings from his father's stomach, in reverse order of swallowing. He rescued Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hera and Hestia. He also saved the brothers of Cronus. This included the Cyclopes, and to thank him, they forged one of Zeus’ most recognisable symbols - his lightning bolt.
