Known as the Clash of the Titans or Battle of the Gods, Zeus was a key warrior in the Titanomachy, the battle between the Olympian Gods and his father Cronus' Titans. The Olympians defeated the Titans and Zeus became recognised as the King of the Gods. He shared the world with his two brothers, Poseidon and Hades. Zeus received the heavens, Poseidon the seas, and Hades the underworld.
Ares got in trouble with mighty Poseidon, for slaying the son of Poseidon as revenge for Poseidon's son raping Ares' daughter. Poseidon summoned Ares to appear before a tribunal of the Olympians, and was acquitted with no charges. This took place upon a hill in Athens and the name given to this hill is the Areopagus, or Hill of Ares.
Athena competed against Poseidon for the patronage of this city that had not yet been named or founded. Whichever gave the better gift to the locals would be the one to win. There are differing accounts of Poseidon's gift, he either created a local water spring, or created the first horse. However, Athena gave the gift of an olive tree and won the patronage of the city of Athens as it was founded.
